Looks like apples can do more than keep the doctor away. A University of Massachusetts Lowell study being published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease shows apple juice can help boost brain function similar to medication and therefore improve memory.

After adding apple juice to the drinking water of aging mice, researchers found that the mice improved on memory tests - and had an increase in the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that send signals from one nerve cell to another and play an important role in memory. Widely known Alzheimer's medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain - but scientists say the apple juice diet did more than that for the animals in this study. The juice increased an important brain chemical and enhanced memory.

Researchers say the positive effect they saw on the mice came from the equivalent of drinking two good-sized glasses of apple juice or eating 2-3 apples a day. They also anticipate that the day may come when foods like apples, apple juice and other apple products are recommended along with Alzheimer's medications.
