factchecker2
I hesitate to bring up Jonathan Rees again, because it's been so quiet here, and we know from experience that any criticism of him will bring about multiple comments from either Rees or his aliases. But there's something important about Rees that's been posted on some blogs and forums, and it sheds a great deal of light on why Rees' behavior is so confounding and anti-social. How can a candidate for City Council, as Rees claims to be, post so many lies and so many harassing messages about people? Nobody's ever encountered a so-called politician like this before -- somebody who goes out of his way to inflict maximum harm on people through the Internet. The answer is that Rees is a sociopath. There's a book that's getting attention, Marta Stout's "The Sociopath Next Door," which has a lot to say about Jonathan Rees. Sociopaths are strange and disturbing people because they have no conscience, and no ability to feel kindness or love for other people. Without a conscience, sociopaths are completely unrestrained in what they can do to others. And worse, sociopaths like Rees enjoy hurting other people. But don't take my word for it. Read Stout's book or listen to an interview with her at http://www.eyeonbooks.com/ibp.php?ISBN=076791581X Here's an excerpt from "The Sociopath Next Door": "Imagine, if you can, not having a conscience, none at all, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern of the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken. And pretend that the concept of responsibility is unknown to you, except as a burden others seem to accept without question, like gullible fools. Now add to this strange fantasy the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless. You are not held back from any of your desires by guilt or shame, and you are never confronted by others for your cold-bloodedness. The ice water in your veins is so bizarre, so completely outside of their personal experience that they seldom even guess at your condition. "In other words, you are completely free of internal restraints, and your unhampered liberty to do just as you please, with no pangs of conscience, is conveniently invisible to the world. You can do anything at all, and still your strange advantage over the majority of people, who are kept in line by their consciences, will most likely remain undiscovered. "The covetous sociopath thinks that life has cheated her somehow, has not given her nearly the same bounty as other people, and so she must even the score by robbing people, by secretly causing destruction in their lives. Retribution is the most important activity in the covetous sociopath's life, her highest priority."
Psycho
The American Psychiatric Association says that being a sociopath can be healthy but that depends on the evironment being evaded by the individual.
