Guest Sharon Gang
Today, Mayor Williams toured the new Visual Warning System established by the Federal Aviation Administration to help warn pilots who fly into the restricted airspace around Washington, DC. The ground-based system will beam red and green lights into the cockpit of aircraft that enter the restricted zone and whose pilots cannot be reached by radio. Mayor Williams tested the system by riding in a helicopter to inspect the visual warning system. Mayor Williams was the only elected leader invited to tour the system today. "This warning light system is one more step toward protecting our nation's capital," said Mayor Williams. "I'm pleased to test the system and glad to know that the latest technology is being used to alert pilots. Time will tell how well the system works. That said, no technology can take the place of open lines of communication between federal agencies and local governments, who are on the front lines in public safety."
