Guest Leslie
Even though millions of people visit Washington D.C every year and the Anacostia River hugs our nation's capital, the Anacostia River is commonly called "D.C.'s forgotten river." This past spring, this 8.4 mile river was deemed "one of the most polluted waterways in the nation." According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), more than 20,000 tons of trash and debris enter the Anacostia's waters each year. From 1989 to 2009, Anacostia Watershed Society volunteers have removed 850 tons of trash from the watershed. United By Blue will be hosting a cleanup of the Anacostia River on Saturday, October 8th from 10 am to 2 pm. We will be meeting in the Anacostia Park "Section F" parking lot (2223 Oklahoma Avenue Northeast, Washington D.C.), be on the lookout for our United By Blue flags. UBB scouted out this site and was quite shocked at what we found. Easily, we saw a few thousand plastic bottles along the marshlands and banks, about 250 tires, and tons of construction and household waste dumped along the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. This could easily be one of our biggest cleanups to date, so tell your neighbors, friends, family, your mailman and everyone you know! Volunteers can register and learn more by clicking here. Celebration: 12:00pm – 2:00pm This year the Celebration will be held in RFK parking lot #6 (right near the bridge that takes you to Kingman and Heritage Islands). There is plenty of parking on site, and it is Metro accessible (Stadium-Armory Station, Orange and Blue lines). The celebration, part of The Nature Conservancy's Picnic for the Planet, will feature notable speakers, live music by local reggae band Proverbs, as well as vendor and organizational tables -- so you can check out what other cool environmental things are going on in the DC metro area. Also, did we mention there will be free food and drinks? Graciously prepared by our partner, Seafarer's Yacht Club, this is just our way of saying "THANKS!" If you are interested in having booth space (must provide own table), please contact Membership and Volunteer Coordinator Maddie Koenig at 301-699-6204 ext. 109 or mkoenig@anacostiaws.org. Back to top Volunteer Information What to Bring: All supplies and materials needed to work will be provided by AWS and our various Earth Day partners! There is no need for volunteers to bring gloves or bags -- your site leader will have them! Please be sure to wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Dressing in layers is advised, as weather conditions in April can change quickly. Please bring a beverage and a snack for yourself if you feel that will be necessary. What to Expect: All volunteers will be working to remove trash and debris from various sites throughout the watershed. Please be aware that this work requires bending and some light lifting, and you are likely to get dirty! When you arrive at your cleanup site, you will be asked to sign in. Be sure to provide your name, email, and emergency contact information. You will need to provide this information even if you have RSVPed through our website. Responsible adults will need to provide this information for anyone under the age of 18. Once you have signed in, your site leader will provide further direction and pass out supplies. Please contact your site leader (contact information provided below if you click on the interactive map) with questions regarding directions, location, etc. on the day of the event. Depending on your chosen cleanup site, you may or may not be within viewing distance of the Anacostia River. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that every volunteer will be provided with a t-shirt, even if you have RSVPed. For more information on volunteering please contact Membership and Volunteer Coordinator Maddie Koenig at 301-699-6204 ext. 109 or mkoenig@anacostiaws.org.
