Holocaust Museum Closed to Honor Memory of Officer Stephen Johns

There are no words to express our grief and shock over today’s events at the Museum, which took the life of Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns. Officer Johns, who died heroically in the line of duty, served on the Museum's security staff for six years.

 

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Johns’s family. We have made the decision to close the Museum Thursday, June 11, in honor of Officer Johns and our flags will be flown at half mast in his memory.

 

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty issued the following statement in response to the Holocaust Museum shooting incident that took the life of a security guard and critically wounded the gunman.

 

Our hearts go out to the families affected by this tragedy. The men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to ensure our safety are truly heroes, and I am deeply saddened that this senseless act of violence threatened the safety of our community.

 

The President and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar offer condolences.

I am shocked and saddened by today’s shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world.

 

Today, we have lost a courageous security guard who stood watch at this place of solemn remembrance. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this painful time.

This horrible crime took the life of Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, whose courage in the line of duty saved lives and protected the hallowed halls of the Holocaust Museum. We are also reminded of the great sacrifices our law enforcement officials, including security guards and the Park Police who protect the National Mall, make every day on our behalf. This tragic act of violence only reaffirms the lessons of peace and human dignity that the Holocaust Museum teaches.

 

MPD, the FBI and the US Park Police are working together on this investigation. More information will be available tomorrow at an 8 am press conference.

 

Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, with the assistance of members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Park Police, are investigating a fatal shooting at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

 

Shortly before 1:00 on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 10, 2009, a lone gunman armed with a long gun opened fire on Special Police Officers (SPO’s) guarding the front entrance of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, located at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW (14th Street and Independence Avenue, SW). The gunman shot one SPO and was himself wounded by return gunfire from two other SPO’s. An off duty Metropolitan Police Department officer in the vicinity at the time the incident was dispatched, along with United States Park Police officers, immediately entered the museum and rendered first aid to the injured.

 

The mortally wounded SPO and the as yet unidentified suspect were transported by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department personnel to an area hospital where the SPO was pronounced dead and the suspect was admitted in critical condition.

 

The SPO has been identified as 39-year-old Stephen Tyrone Johns of Temple Hills, Maryland.

According to local police, James Von Brunn, an 88-year-old man armed with a rifle has shot and killed guard Stephen Tyrone Johns, and been wounded himself, in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday afternoon.

 

The incident occurred slightly after 1:00 p.m. (EDT) (17:00 UTC). Preliminary reports say that the man entered the building and opened fire, firing five or six rounds before being shot down by other security guards in the building.

 

Roads next to the museum were shut down after the shooting happened.

 

The gunman had links to white supremacists, police say.

 

"I heard a shot and though it was sort of a loud, like someone had dropped something," said an eyewitness, Angela Andelson, to the Agence France-Presse news agency. "And I see all these security guards kind of like ducking. I kind of glanced again and saw a gunman coming in [...] a long-looking kind of gun. I just ran in to one of the exhibits to try to take cover. I heard the first one. When I turned and looked there were maybe two to four more shots that I heard. People were screaming and ducking down getting on the floor, getting under benches."

Dear Erik,

 

Your Aunt Alyce has told me that you are a strong, healthy six year old boy and that you miss your father, James von Brunn, who has been held by federal authorities now for some time. We all hope that he will soon now be released, for in the opinion of those of us who understand the malfunctioning of certain elements of our once near perfect government he has committed no crime. But quite the contrary, he has taken very courageous and patriotic actions to try to alert the U.S. citizen to the real organization of the Federal Reserve System and its great danger to the survival of our once White Christian constitutional republic, the cornerstone of Western Civilization.

 

It is my conviction that James von Brunn deserves the gratitude and assistance of every White Christian citizen of these United States. And I believe he would have this support were it not for the cabal which controls not only the Federal Reserve System but also the nationally effective communications media.

Today’s shooting at the United States Holocaust Museum is shocking and deeply disturbing on several counts.

 

B’nai B’rith is appalled that the shooting took place in a building dedicated to remembering the worst Genocide in history. The museum was founded in the hope that, by remembering the Shoah, it will never be repeated. For it to be the site of a shooting by a man identified as anti-Semitic and a white supremacist is testimony to the need for humanity to take actions to prevent hate incidents from ever happening again.

 

B’nai B’rith is highly sensitive to the impact of hate-filled terror, as many staff members at B’nai B’rith headquarters were held hostage for 39 hours in 1977 by members of the Hanafi Muslim sect.

I was very sad to hear about officer Stephen Johns lost his life. My condolence to his family and my prayers are with your father and you all. I know what its like to lose both parents and I lost a friend to a fatal shooting and I am so sorry that you lost a loved one that was close to you and its going to take a very long time. But you will never forget him and you will be sad for the rest of your life time. That’s what I am going though the same thing with my parents that where dear to me and very close. Statement Regarding Shooting at United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

 

“Members of the FBI’s National Capital Response Squad, SWAT Team, and Evidence Response Team deployed to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., to provide on-scene support following a shooting incident at the museum,” said Joseph Persichini, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “The FBI had no prior knowledge of any act or threat directed at the Holocaust Museum. Preliminary indication is that this incident involved a lone suspect. At this time, we have no additional intelligence information to indicate threats to area landmarks but will monitor the situation closely. The FBI has an outstanding relationship with the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police, and we will work together to jointly investigate the facts related to this case.”
