Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

CVS/pharmacy and its website, CVS.com, are cooperating with its suppliers and the FDA in the recall of certain food products containing peanut butter and peanuts. Upon notice of an FDA-issued recall, CVS implements its product withdrawal process to remove the affected products from its stores and website. To further protect the health and safety of its customers, a block is placed in our store register system to prevent the sale of these recalled items.

For more information about this recall, including an updated list of products that are affected, please visit the FDA's website for peanut butter product recalls at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/salmonellatyph.html

FDA to confirm that the sources of the outbreak of illnesses caused by Salmonella Typhimurium are peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant.Peanut butter is sold by PCA in bulk containers ranging in size from five (5) to 1,700 pounds. The peanut paste is sold in sizes ranging from 35-pound containers to product sold by the tanker container. Neither of these products is sold directly to consumers.

However, through its investigation, FDA has determined that PCA distributed potentially contaminated product to more than 100 consignee firms, for use as an ingredient in hundreds of different products, such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream.

FDA initiated an inspection of PCA's Blakely plant on January 9 shortly after learning that this firm might be linked to the ongoing Salmonella outbreak. FDA finished its inspection on January 27.

Here is the Peanut Corporation of America latest statement.

We at Peanut Corporation of America express our deepest and most sincere empathy for those sickened in the salmonella outbreak and their families. We share the public's concern about the potential connection to Peanut Corporation of America's products.

Our top priority has been and will continue to be to ensure the public safety and to work promptly to remove all potentially contaminated products out of the marketplace. To that end,

we have issued extensive recalls that broadly encompass potentially contaminated product.

We understand that the media and public are eager to obtain facts related to that outbreak.

Peanut Corporation of America's employees and attorneys are deeply engaged in the process of learning and understanding the facts and issues here. When they are prepared to discuss those facts, additional information will be provided as appropriate. For Peanut Corporation to engage

in any discussion of the facts at this point is premature.

Stewart's Shops Recalls Caramel Candy Bar Dip Ice Cream Because Of Possible Health Risk

Stewart’s Shops of Saratoga Springs, NY, is recalling this single flavor of dip ice cream from its shops. After previously indicating there was not a problem, our vendor now tells us that an ingredient has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This action is a result of the PCA expanded recall of January 28, 2009 for all products manufactured in their Blakely, Georgia facility since January 1, 2007.

Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. For more information on Salmonella, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Website at http://www.cdc.gov.

Caramel Candy Bar Ice Cream was distributed in 3 gallon boxes bearing Plant # 36-3918 directly to Stewart’s Shops in New York and southern Vermont.

Stewart’s has had no reports of any illness to date.

Since it has been removed from sale and was sold at the dip counter as dip ice cream in cones and dishes, it is assumed that what has been sold has been consumed.

If for some reason you have Stewarts Caramel Candy Bar ice cream in your home, please return it to the shop where it was purchased for a full refund. Consumers with questions can contact Stewart’s Shops Consumer Affairs at 518-581-1201 x2130.

These Ocean Spray products are sold nationwide in retail stores. Ocean Spray is removing these products from retail store shelves and advising customers and consumers to destroy these trail mix products.

PCA is the subject of an ongoing FDA investigation concerning the recent salmonella outbreak. The recalled products contain peanuts that were manufactured by PCA and that were supplied by PCA to Ocean Spray’s third party contract packer for its 1.75-oz and 48-oz Fruit and Nut Trail Mix products.

No illnesses or adverse effects have been reported regarding these products to date. As soon as FDA began its investigation of the PCA facility, the contract packer changed suppliers of its peanut ingredients for these products.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products are urged to destroy the product. Consumers with questions or who would like a refund may call the Ocean Spray Consumer Hotline at 1-800-662-3263.

As a result of the expansion of Peanut Corporation of America’s recall to include all peanut ingredients produced in their Blakely, Georgia facility since Jan. 1, 2007, Kellogg Company has issued a voluntary nationwide recall for the following products:

Keebler® Soft Batch Homestyle Chocolate Chunk Cookies and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, 2.5-ounce size only, with a “Best If Used Before” date prior to June 30, 2009 (06 30 9), with the following UPC codes: 3010032708, 3010037899.

Special K Protein™ Meal Bar Honey Almond variety only, 6-count and 8-count packages, with a “Best If Used Before” date prior to February 1, 2010 (FEB 01 2010), with the following UPC codes: 3800039778, 3800039935, 3800039931.

No other Special K® products are part of this recall. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection to the above products.

Although these products do not contain any peanut ingredients from Peanut Corporation of America, they were produced at another company’s facility on the same line as products that were made for other companies using potentially contaminated PCA ingredients. For that reason, this voluntary recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution.

Also as a result of Peanut Corporation of America’s expanded recall, the January 16, 2009 Kellogg Company recall of Austin® and Keebler® Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and select snack-size packs of Famous Amos® Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler® Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies is now expanded to include all code dates. Retailers had previously been advised to remove all of these products from store shelves, regardless of code date, so the vast majority of these recalled products are no longer in the marketplace, but consumers having any of these products in their homes are urged to destroy them.

The Georgia Peanut Commission of Tifton, Ga. is recalling 11 oz. and 4 lb. cans of skinless and honey roasted peanut product, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditic and arthritis.

The canned peanut product was distributed from the Georgia Peanut Commission Gift Shop in Tifton, Ga. The expanded recall now includes all peanuts and peanut-related products produced at the PCA plant from January 2007 to present. The Company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.
