Guest DC Government Worker
Washington, DC--Ward 5 Councilmember Harry “Tommy” Thomas, Jr. is hosting the 2nd Team Thomas—Fore Our Youth Golf Tournament at the Langston Golf Course on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 8:30 am. Event details are listed below. The tournament benefits Team Thomas SwingAway/DC First Swing, a not-for-profit urban youth program that introduces boys and girls to swing sports: golf, tennis, and softball/baseball. Team Thomas SwingAway/DC First Swing also provides interactive learning experiences by connecting kids to our city’s recreation centers and libraries. As part of the tournament, children from schools near the Langston Golf Course will participate in golf and tennis training stations as a way to expose them to swing sports. They will also learn about the other programs Langston offers kids. “Our inner-city youngsters need exposure to a range of different sports, including golf, softball, and baseball,” said Councilmember Thomas. “Excelling in a particular sport can lead to an athletic scholarship to college. Sports also teaches self-discipline, teamwork, leadership, and cooperation, as well as how to share, handle stress, and competition. The goal of the 2nd Team Thomas—Fore Our Youth Golf Tournament is to fund these much-needed sports exposure programs for our urban youth,” stated Thomas.
